Please note that in order to attend the AGM you must be a member of the society.

I strongly encourage you to come along to show your support, hear about what the society has done across the last year, and to have your say in who joins the committee for 2021. We need ten percent of our members to attend in order to elect new committee members, and this will be done through a majority vote.

The main purpose of the AGM is to vote in Committee members for the coming calendar year. If you are interested in being a part of the 2021 committee, the application form can be found here. You can apply for any of the roles listed at There is also a document detailing what the roles entail. Due to the impacts of the Covid-19 Pandemic, the roles of the 2020 committee were extended. The 2021 committee will therefore serve a shorter period in their roles, and unlike previous years take part in organising summer music activities.

To apply, please return the application form (available  here) to by the deadline of Wednesday 17th February at midday. Anyone can apply, whatever you study, as long as you are a current UoB student and a member of the Music Society, but please be prepared to make a 1-minute speech at the AGM if your position is contested.

Members of the current committee will be able to answer questions you may have on different positions and responsibilities, and share our own experiences of what you might expect from a normal pandemic-free year with UoBMS. This will take place on Wednesday 10th February at 5:30pm. Please email for the details.

Secondly, we are now accepting nominations for Honorary President of the Society for the coming year. If you wish to nominate someone (normally a prominent composer, performer etc. who could visit the university), then please send your nomination to by midday on Wednesday 17th February with a brief explanation for your choice. This person usually has links to either the university or the city of Birmingham. Previous honorary presidents include: Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla, Ed Gardner and John Rutter.

Do remember that as a member of the Society, you are eligible to raise points in a committee meeting to be discussed. If you would like something to be discussed by committee, please email me and we can try to discuss this in the final meeting prior to the AGM or pass onto the incoming committee as time may be tight during the AGM.

We hope to see you all there, even if you do not wish to apply for a Committee position. It’s a great opportunity to find out more about the society and to vote on the people that will run the society for the coming year. This is a really exciting opportunity to be involve with the Music Society, and to learn and develop new skills. I look forward to receiving applications, and if you’re interested but not sure yet about applying, the welcome session on 10th February will be a really valuable opportunity for you to ask any questions and get an insight into the benefits of holding a committee position.
