Takemitsu's captivating Signals from Heaven for brass ensemble heralds the opening of this Summer Festival orchestral concert. We celebrate a year of outstanding student music making with this final performance of the 21/22 academic year. A highlight of the year has been the success of the Music Society Soloist prize, with joint winners being awarded this year. Ioannis Emmanouilidis is a Maths/Music joint honours student and joins the orchestra for a performance of Elgar's Cello Concerto. Prokofiev's fifth symphony closes the cocnert - a work written in 1944 - the composer stated that he "conceived of it as glorifying the grandeur of the human spirit, praising the free and happy man - his strength, his generosity, and the purity of his soul".
